Local Former Navy Officer Speaks Out on Eric Fanning Appointment as Secretary of Army
"It's a historic event," said former Naval Officer Greg Smith of Norfolk. Smith, who is gay, was honorably discharged from the Navy under the old "Don't Ask, Don't Tell" policy. "For someone to reach that position of leadership in the military has never happened before and it sends a message that we've come a long way since 'Don't Ask, Don't Tell,'" he said.
