Actors’ Workshop of Virginia in collaboration with TRDance presents Angel on Eros, a new play by Hampton Road’s actor and playwright Ricardo Melendez. The Company that brought Nijinsky’s Last Dance and Cloaked to Hampton Roads, both produced regionally and internationally, is now producing the world premiere of Angel on Eros.
“Angel on Eros is a gay play written by a gay playwright,” said TR Dance Executive Director Christopher Reybrouck. “It’s is a brand new work specifically for gay audiences and has just been selected for a seven-Day run at the Dublin Gay Theatre Festival in May of 2023.”
Playwright Melendez is perhaps better known locally as one of the founders and artistic director at TR Dance in Norfolk.
Angel on Eros looks at a friendship between two men of differing sexual orientation and offers a view into the transactional nature of human interactions. Framed inside the business of the arts, this play journeys into a world of human disillusion, self-discovery, and acceptance. Directed by Steve J. Earle, Angel on Eros attempts to promote the dialogue concerning theater containing homosexual subject matters as viewed through the 21st Century perspective.
Angel is a forty-something year old gay painter experiencing a painter’s block and Matt is a young married restauranteur discouraged with the boredom of his day-to-day routine. During the play, the two men develop a friendship as they search for an escape from their present circumstances. As their friendship develops, they are forced to confront the unexpected consequences of their wishes and desires.
In collaboration with Spanish painter Javier Trelis Sempere, whose work will be incorporated into the play’s narrative and whose images grace the production’s promotional material, Angel on Eros delves into the nature of interpersonal relationship amongst men and the humanity at times veiled behind the beauty of art.
