Let’s Get to Know New Author and Veteran Aprille Caniff

Today, we are going to get to know Aprille Caniff, a veteran and newly published author of “Trust.” Caniff currently serves as a corporal in the Norfolk City jail and in the Air National Guard and wants to give back to the community she serves, telling OutWire757 in an email that “I try to live by the golden rule every day and I am lucky to have a sheriff who believes as well as emulates that motto as well. I believe people can change if given the chance and I enjoy seeing people succeed just like the characters in the book.”

Take a moment to get to know new author Aprille!

Where were you born and raised?

I was born in New Hampshire and raised in Massachusetts 

How long have you lived in Hampton Roads?

24 Years now. The military brought me and I loved it.

What do you do for money/living?

I work for the Norfolk Sheriff’s Office as a Deputy Sheriff working in the jail.

How long have you been ‘out’ (if applicable) and who was the hardest person to tell? 

I came out when I was 19. My biggest fear was what my dad would say. He took me to the beach and said “we have more in common than I thought. Now we can check out girls together!”  He was awesome. 

Who is your LGBTQ hero and why?

Ellen (Degeneres). She knew the risks of coming out when she did and did it anyway consequences be damned!!

Is a picture worth a thousand words? Explain your answer.

Yes, but actions speak volumes.

What is the most memorable LGBTQ moment of your life?

The day “don’t ask, don’t tell” (DADT) went away. I was in Afghanistan and I knew I couldn’t be kicked out just because of what I was anymore. 

On what do you insist upon daily?

Making someone laugh.

If you could give your 16 year-old self one piece of advice, what would it be?

Don’t settle for anything. 

Do you have any suggestions for the local leaders of Hampton Roads’ LGBTQ organizations?

Get the word out on events on more than just the LGBTQ media sources. 

What is the best aspect of the Hampton Roads LGBTQ community?

We come from everywhere!!!!!!

Name one thing you would change about the Hampton Roads LGBTQ community? 

Why?  We are LGBTQ!!!  We are always changing. Always evolving. We are the rainbow!  

What LGBTQ stereotype annoys you the most?

Flannel on lesbians 

What non-LGBTQ issue do you feel most passionate about?

Suicide 

What natural gift would you most like to possess?

The ability to play the piano. 

What quality do you most admire in a person?

Loyalty

What turns you on creatively, spiritually or emotionally?

Music

What is your favorite curse word?

Shit
