Following yesterday morning’s ruling rejecting the injunction brought by his election opponent John Uhrin, that sought to keep Nygaard from assuming office, David Nygaard made history as Virginia Beach’s first openly gay member of City Council.

Tuesday’s ruling and swearing in made Nygaard’s first votes last night official. However, the panel of three judges still need to take up the Uhrin’s initial lawsuit. The trial is scheduled for February 21-22.
In his opening remarks as a Councilman, Nygaard thanked his early supporters and father for giving him a chance. Nygaard also mentioned the close election and pending lawsuit.
“We’ve had a very challenging campaign and highly publicized, even this afternoon. We were laughed at, we were dismissed and ignored. Many of you saw differently.”
Nygaard is confident that Uhrin’s lawsuit will be settled in his favor next month and he looks forward to working for his constituents in the Beach District during his four year term.
