Our charismatic and beautiful son and brother died Thursday, August 9, 2018. William, the youngest of three children to William and Tina (Felts) Phillips Jr., was raised in a loving home in Norfolk, Va. with two older sisters. William had it all, intelligence, confidence, a stunning smile, fantastic sense of humor and the ability to engage and forge a relationship with anyone he came in contact with. He was sensitive, kind, and caring.

William was born July 9, 1984 in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania; however, he was a native of Norfolk through and through. He loved to spend time with his family whether it was enjoying Mr. Lee’s fine sushi at This Old House or digging his toes in the sand behind the Thirsty Camel at the beach in Ocean View. With great joy, he will always be remembered as the most humble young man who even in his own greatest time of need, would give his last dollar or every ounce of his energy to help another in need.

William is survived by his husband Robert Earl Derting of Chester, VA and their two fur kids, Anja Marie and Duncan Burton; his adoring and loving parents William and Tina (Felts) Phillips Jr. of Norfolk, VA; his little big sister Bridgette Ann and John Sonner, nephew Michael Scot Evans Jr. and niece Courtlynn Rose Evans of Chesapeake, VA; big sister Jennifer Irene and John Tholander, niece Autumn Marie and nephew Spencer Roland of Norfolk VA. We will forever miss his keen sense of humor, his delicious macaroni and cheese, the laughter he brought to all gatherings, and the sheer humanity he lent to the world around him. If the greatness of a man is measured in terms of endearment, then William, “Will”, “Little Bill”, “Bub”, “Bubbie”, “Bubba”, “Uncle Bill”, and “Mom’s Favorite” is forever one of the greatest men of all. For those who wish to join in celebration of William’s life, a viewing will be held on Tuesday, August 14, 2018 at 6 pm, followed by a memorial service at 7pm at Hollomon-Brown Funeral Home, 8464 Tidewater Drive, Norfolk, VA 23518.
