Today in LGBTQ History – First Service of Metropolitan Community Church

On this day in 1968, the first worship service of the Metropolitan Community Church (MCC) took place in the living room of Rev. Troy Perry’s home in Huntington Park, CA.  Rev. Perry was removed as a clergy by a Pentecostal denomination because of his homosexuality in the early 1960’s and spent the several years reconciling his sexuality and his Christian spirituality.  The result was the MCC church and the first service, attended by 12 persons that started the international movement of Metropolitan Community Churches. Today, MCC counts more than 43,000 members and adherents in almost 300 congregations in 22 countries, changing Christianity and serving as a close ally in the struggle for LGBT rights and equality.

In Hampton Roads, the New Life Metropolitan Community Church serves the community with a wide variety of spiritual programs  Regular Sunday service is at 10:45 a.m. at their new church.  Check out the MCC’s services and events at their website here.
