Congressman David Cicilline (RI-01), one of only seven openly gay members of Congress, will headline a lunchtime fundraiser on October 11 in Norfolk to benefit Elaine Luria (D), candidate for Virginia’s Second District in the House of Representatives.
Among his leadership positions in the House of Representatives, Cicilline co-chairs the Congressional LGBT Equality Caucus. Cicilline authored and introduced the Equality Act, legislation that would prohibit discrimination of LGBT Americans in employment, housing, public accommodations, government funding and education.
Additionally, Cicilline has advocated for several federal departments and agencies to enhance protections for LGBT individuals. For example, he has urged the Department of Education to develop and finalize guidance clearly detailing the obligations schools have to protect LGBT students from discrimination, bullying and harassment. – ensuring our youth and students are safe from bullying and harassment.
Cicilline is also a member of the House Foreign Affairs Committee, where he works to ensure that U.S. foreign policy holds foreign governments accountable for their failure to prevent violence against LGBT individuals. To that end he also introduced the Global Respect Act, legislation that would help prevent international violators of LGBT human rights from entering the United States and improve the U.S. State Department’s tracking and reporting of violence and other human rights violations against LGBT individuals abroad.
This event will take place on October 11 from 11:30 a.m.-1:30 p.m. As this is a fundraising event, a minimum donation of $150 is required to attend.
