Alison Bechdel’s iconic graphic novel, Fun Home comes to life at the Wells Theatre in Norfolk later this month and is the Tony Award-winning masterpiece musical under the direction of Jessica Holt.
Fun Home follows Bechdel’s journey of self-discovery as she recounts the mysteries of her childhood with her father in the family funeral home. Fun Home explores Bechdel’s path of self-discovery and her own journey as an LGBTQ+ writer, artist, and woman.
Called “Heart-gripping and cathartic” by The New York Times, Fun Home explores the complex narrative of coming-of-age and coming out that is often shared among so many in the LGBTQ+ community that do not often take center stage.
To commemorate Fun Home and celebrate everyone’s experiences with family and growing up, Virginia Stage and OutWire757 have partnered with the LGBT Life Center for a Fun Home Night Out the evening of January 25.
The Fun Home Night Out will include a pre-show mixer featuring Happy Hour drinks and the unveiling of “My Family” – a photo project produced by the LGBT Life Center and photographed by Eric Hause, publisher of Outwire757, which celebrates the unique diversity of LGBTQ+ families in Hampton Roads.
The latest edition of OutLife757, Coastal Virginia’s LGBTQ lifestyle magazine, will be available to all who attend, as well as copies of the “My Family” photo booklet.
The party continues after the show with Outwire757’s monthly Out in the Open Story Slam in the Tazewell Lounge. Enjoy a cash bar, free eats, and share your Fun Home stories on stage.
Fun Home begins on January 23 with an official opening night on January 26, and continues with performances through February 10. Tickets range $20 – $55 with discounts for groups, students, and the military. For more information about group tickets and events, contact Tiara Dimond at groups@vastage.org.
