The Coastal Virginia Unitarian Universalist church in Virginia Beach will host a “Social Justice University,” on September 30, from 2:30-5 p.m. The event is being organized by the Legislative Collaborative Table, a coalition of twenty-four local organizations and aims to encourage citizens to become more civically active beyond the voting booth.
Attendees will learn how to advocate and speak to elected officials on a wide variety of issues. The organizers believe that speaking directly with elected officials and collaborating creates more powerful messages. The group is planning group visits to the General Assembly in Richmond.
Among the issues that will be discussed include:
- LGBTQ+ non-discrimination;
- Voting rights and redistricting;
- Immigration;
- Mental health resources;
- Sea level rise;
- Public transportation funding;
PFLAG Norfolk/Hampton Roads is one of nine organizers of the event. The other organizers include Mothers Out Front Hampton Roads, Virginia Interfaith Power & Light, Interspiritual Empowerment Project, Legislative Collaborative Table of South Hampton Roads, Legislative Collaborative Table of South Hampton Roads, OneVirginia2021, League of Women Voters of South Hampton Roads, Chesapeake Bay Group Sierra Club and the Virginia Interfaith Center for Public Policy.
