Fall event and festival season is upon us and this weekend offers residents a wide variety of events and festivals from the classic Stockley Gardens Art Show and Wine Fest in Town Point Park to more unique events such as this year’s three-day NEON Festival in downtown Norfolk. The NEON Festival is a relatively new yet fun and funky festival that celebrates new energy and light in the dynamic Norfolk Arts District with innovative art, live performances, music and food.
One NEON Festival event that may be of particular interest to OutWire757 readers is the one-night gallery pop-up called #VirginiaAF launched by the Limbic System, Inc. This pop-up gallery is a call to recalibrate- from straight / white as neutral – to an American identity that centralizes black, brown, and LGBQT people, asserting themselves as a fluid, intelligent, articulate, pioneering, dissenting culture relentlessly reinventing itself as it fights for freedom and justice. This event will take place October 20 from 6:00pm to 10:00p.m. and will take place in an empty storefront located at 848 Granby Street (the corner of Olney Road and Granby Street). #virginiaAF is a free event and will feature multiple DJs along with works from about a dozen local artists. A cash bar will be on-site serving beer and wine, and benefiting the LGBT Life Center.
Curators for this event include local artists Ashley Berkman, Hampton Boyer, Nikki Leone, Avery Shaffer, Will Sprueill is produced by Patrick Mullins and Janelle Burchfield and is presented in conjunction with #americanAF Festival
#AmericanAF was a three-week festival at the New Ohio Theatre in New York City with a nightly multi-act bill of short films, plays, panels, music, visual art, and discussion. This was a pop-up event aimed to be a recalibration and recentering of American identity, to speak from a place that is fluid, diverse, inclusive, pioneering, intelligent, and relentlessly reinventing itself in the name of equality and justice.
