Earlier today, Virginia Beach City Councilman-elect David Nygaard received certification from the Virginia Beach Registrar’s Office finalizing his election following last week’s election. It remains to be seen whether or not his opponent will request a formal recount.
Currently, Nygaard leads incumbent John Uhrin by approximately 212 votes. According to the Commonwealth’s election law, candidates request a formal recount within ten days if the difference in votes is less than one percent. At this threshold, the candidate would have to cover the cost of the recount. If the difference in votes is less than .5%, the locality would pay for the recount.
At the time of posting, Uhrin has neither conceded nor requested a recount.
