Royalty has arrived in Hampton Roads. Queen Mary is taking the stage every Wednesday evening for the next three weeks to bring her unique brand of music, humor, and performance art to the people.
Queen Mary was born out of the creative dreams of her primary ego, Robert Malkowski. A Virginia Beach native, Robert studied art history and architecture at the University of Virginia. After graduation, he opened his own New York fashion design house specializing in couture commissions for elite clientele. He created a ready-to-wear line of women’s clothing that debuted at Henri Bendel.Drawing on his 30 years in the fashion industry, he created Queen Mary from the ground up. Bead by bead.
He initially created the Queen as a one-time bucket list performer for his 54th birthday. Fortunately, that one-off event breathed life into the Queen, and she soon developed a persona of her own. In the two years since, Queen Mary’s performances have become a regular spectacle at Drag Yourself to Brunch at Croc’s 19th Street Bistro.
“I wanted her to be a larger-than-life diva, a performer of exceptional caliber like those who had mesmerized me over the years,” he said.
This summer, audience-goers can experience the Queen’s one-woman extravaganza at The Zeiders American Dream Theater in Virginia Beach every Wednesday night at 9 PM through August 3.
