Chesapeake Teen Lobbies for Change in School Policy

According to a story in today’s Virginia-Pilot, Cheseapeake teen Dan Barnum, a 16-year-old sophomore at Oscar Smith High, made the decision to live his life on his own terms.  Teenage years and high school can be tough, but being true to yourself and being who you are meant to be can make things a bit more challenging.

Fortunately, Dan has a supportive family and his school is being accommodating.  However, he has endured his share of bullying and intimidation tactics, especially while using the restroom.  In fact, he stopped using the restrooms at school altogether due to the bullying.

As a result, Dan has started a petition requesting the Chesapeake School Board adopt stricter penalties for harassment in school restrooms.  The Chesapeake School Board and those in surrounding communities also have bullying and harassment policies, but for some students like Dan these do not go far enough.
