Memorial Day weekend marks the beginning of Summer! OutWire757 wishes everyone a safe and fun Memorial Day Weekend!  Please do the following:

  • Thank a veteran and take a moment to remember those who have passed.
  • Wear sunscreen!
  • Be nice and play safe.
  • Moisturize!  Skin is a gift.
  • Get some rest – Pride month starts next month and we are going to be busy!

Beyond the beach, barbecues and house parties, here is a curated list of events and activities taking place Memorial Day weekend. Thursday, May 23

DC Black Pride, through May 27

Since 1991, more than 300,000 members of the lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender community of African descent and their allies have come to Washington, DC during Memorial Day Weekend to celebrate the beauty of a shared community and raise awareness and funding for HIV/ AIDS in the name and spirit of Black Pride.

Comedy Night at Starving Artist Cafe, 7 p.m.

Join comedians Tracey Swinarsky, Holly Davis, Torrey Huggins, Kristen Howard, Joe Wills, and Luhray!!

Out-n-Fit Takeover – ZUMBA, 7:35 p.m.

Shake it with ONF and OneLife Fitness. Join ONF at OneLIfe Fitness for an hour of group fitness. This week, we are shaking it real good with Zumba. Let go of the outside world and enjoy the music and shake what your mamma gave you.

Gillette Bella’s Thursday Tuck, 8 p.m.

From 8-9 we have power hour specials and starting at 9 pm we have a Rupaul Drag Race Season 11 Viewing Party. Stay after the viewing party for a fabulous show hosted by Gillette Bella with rotating special guests from Hampton Roads, Richmond and DC. Also featuring The Tuckettes.

Friday, May 24

36th Annual Pungo Strawberry Festival, Virginia Beach, runs through Sunday, May 26

Virginia Women’s Music Festival – All weekend

Music for women, by women: a women-only event for more than 25 years. Our annual four day Memorial weekend festival welcomes all women for music, games, dancing, workshops, and more! Held at our membership campground located between Charlettesville and Richmond, Virginia.

Fiesta Friday at Starving Artist Cafe, 5-9 p.m.

It’s Vinyl Night with the Taco Artist!!! Come spin some vinyl with DJ Nicole!

Speed Friending, 8 p.m., LGBT Life Center

An opportunity for adults to come, hang out, join us for a pot luck desserts at the LGBT Life Center. Bring a dessert to share!

LGBTQ Night at “It’s Only a Play” at the Little Theater of Virginia Beach, 8:30 p.m.

Join LTVB and the LGBT Life Center for friendship, laughs, and, of course, cocktails at LGBT NIGHT for IT’S ONLY A PLAY!!

Showgirls Live!, 10:45, 37th and Zen

Join us at 37th and Zen for our “Showgirls live” show! We have an ALL STAR cast and the first show is at 10:45 followed by our WET contest which is called “A splash for life”! All money earned from that will be donated to LGBT Life Center! 

Saturday, May 25

Drag Bingo Hosted by Sandra Lopez, 1-3 p.m., MJ’s Tavern

Catch Stonewall Drag Bingo the 4th Saturday of every month to benefit ForKids and the Transgender Assistance Program of VA! Hosted by Coastal Virginia’s premier drag sensation, Sandra Lopez! Games, prizes, and FUN! Family friendly.

Cavaliers (pansexual/leather), LGBT Life Center, 8 p.m.

Social and support group for the pansexual community with an interest in leather.

Sunday, May 26

Give Back Bingo to Support the LGBT Life Center, 10-1 p.m. & 1-4 p.m.

Join us for a chance to win big with over $7,000 paid out weekly. The hall is fully air conditioned with a smoking and non smoking room as well as a concession bar for drinks, snacks and more!

Monday, May 27

Chesapeake Memorial Day Ceremony
When: 11 a.m.
Where: City Council Chamber – City Hall – 306 Cedar Road

Chesapeake’s Annual Memorial Day Observance is presented by The Mayor’s Commission on Veterans Affairs. The event is open to the public.

Norfolk Memorial Day Commemoration to honor fallen service members
When: 11 a.m.
Where: Mt. Olive Cemetery, Obendorfer Rd. and Berkley Ave Ext.

The Berkley Historical Society and the Attucks American legion Post Five are honoring the men and women who have given their lives serving in the military. The event will feature traditional African drumming and a walking tour of If These Grounds Could Talk. Visitors are encouraged to bring a flag or flowers to place on service members’ graves.

Norfolk Memorial Day Ceremony
When: 2 p.m.
Where: Nauticus Theater

Featured speaker will be Vice Admiral Bruce H. Lindsey, Deputy Commander of the U.S. Fleet Forces Command The U.S. Fleet Forces Band will play. 

Virginia Beach

Tidewater Veterans Memorial Day Ceremony
When: Noon
Where: Tidewater Veterans Memorial, 1000 19th St.

Mayor Robert M. Dyer will be the keynote speaker. The Virginia Beach Police Department’s Honor Guard Unit-Rifle will provide a 21-Gun Salute, and then followed by the Invocation by Chaplain David Yemington. 

Portsmouth

135th Memorial Day Parade
10 a.m. to 12 p.m.
Where: High Street Corridor 

A Portsmouth tradition since 1884, the Memorial Day parade is one of the oldest parades in the country commemorating Memorial Day. The annual event salutes service members in the military. Enjoy the floats and marching bands from around the area.

Newport News

Memorial Day Ceremony
When: 11 a.m.
Where: Victory Arch at 25th St. and West Ave. in downtown Newport News

After the ceremony, the public is invited to learn about America’s military heritage at the Virginia War Museum for a $1 off of the general admission prices.

Hampton

Memorial Day Ceremonial Band
When: 2 p.m. and 3 p.m.
Where: Hampton National Cemetery

Join the U.S. Fleet Forces Ceremonial Band at the Hampton National Cemetery. The event is free and open to the public.

Suffolk

Memorial Day Ceremony
When: 10 a.m.
Where: Albert G. Horton, Jr. memorial Veterans Cemetery

The Memorial Day Ceremony begins at 10 a.m. The public is encouraged to attend.

Isle of Wight

Memorial Day Service
When: 11 a.m. to 12 p.m.
Where Veterans Memorial at N. Church Street.

The ceremony is being held at the Smithfield Veterans Memorial at the corner of North Church and Luter Street. Attendees are encouraged to attend lunch at American Legion Post 49 on S. Church St. after the ceremony.
